ABOUT HALO

follow the halo is a digital zine that supports visual arts from the middle east and beyond. every month, we release an issue around a theme - past issues have explored themes of diaspora, coming of age, and empowerment - accompanied by a commissioned work created in collaboration with an emerging artist.

follow the halo aims to support regional artists through grassroots initiatives. we support artists through our monthly residencies, product collaborations, interviews, write ups and critical dialogue (all of which are included in our issues). we believe in creating an inclusive community that fosters cultural production for artists from across the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. check out past issues here. if you would like to get involved contact us on darahghanem@hotmail.com

NOTE FROM OUR FOUNDER

this project is a result of the internet. i owe much of my own artistic awakening to the internet and it is because of the internet that i became familiar with works that inspire my practice. being part of this digital generation means that the internet has become part and parcel of how we experience the world - so it only made sense to celebrate the visual solely through the internet.

the internet has made it easy for all of us to participate in the arts - either by creating it or supporting it. that’s why, apart from our publication, we created our online store. every purchase you make goes to commissioning and supporting regional and emerging artists. at the heart of follow the halo is the belief that cultural production can and should be supported through individual efforts.

i decided to call this project 'follow the halo' because halos are often associated with positive, soulful energy. also, my name, darah, is arabic for 'halo' - so it made sense to follow the halo. by refreshing this page you are supporting the arts & culture.
